FedEx Ground Progress Update

Check out the progress photos for the FedEx Ground Automated Sorting Facility in St. Petersburg, FL.  The 240,000 SF facility is being built along I-275 on a 62-acre former landfill site, and it has required several unique construction considerations above and beyond a typical project.  Since the landfill material had the potential for excessive future settlement, the site was treated with deep dynamic compaction to compact the landfill materials.  The building and exterior concrete paving were also supported by over 1,600 driven pre-cast concrete piers, and the building incorporated a 12” thick structural concrete floor slab.  Underneath the floor slab, a methane gas mitigation system was installed to evacuate potential methane gases created by decomposing landfill materials.  The progress photos above show the roofing nearing completion, as well as the completed concrete tilt-up walls and steel framing.  The building is scheduled to be complete by February 2017.
